Post-Publication Discussion Policy
The Journal of Language, Literature, Social and Cultural Studies (JLLSCS) is committed to promoting open scholarly dialogue, constructive criticism, and responsible academic exchange following the publication of research articles. The journal recognizes that post-publication discussion is an important component of scholarly communication, contributing to transparency, accountability, the critical evaluation of research findings, and the maintenance of an accurate and reliable scholarly record.
This policy is informed by the relevant publication ethics principles and guidance of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). It applies to comments, critiques, scholarly responses, and other substantive contributions relating to articles published in JLLSCS across the fields of language, literature, social sciences, and cultural studies.
1. Scope and Purpose
Post-publication discussion provides an opportunity for readers, researchers, authors, and other members of the academic community to examine, question, clarify, and critically evaluate published research.
JLLSCS welcomes scholarly contributions that address the theoretical foundations, research methods, interpretation of findings, originality, academic significance, and ethical integrity of published articles.
The objectives of post-publication discussion are to:
Encourage critical engagement with published research.
Promote transparency, accountability, and academic integrity.
Provide opportunities to clarify methodological, theoretical, or interpretive issues.
Identify potential errors, inaccuracies, or ethical concerns affecting published work.
Facilitate constructive dialogue between authors and readers.
Support the correction of the scholarly record when necessary.
Post-publication discussion is intended to advance academic understanding rather than to promote personal disputes, unsupported allegations, or inappropriate criticism.
2. Submission of Post-Publication Comments
Readers and researchers wishing to comment on a published article may submit their contributions through the official communication channels of JLLSCS.
Submissions should:
Clearly identify the original article by title, author(s), publication year, and DOI or URL, where available.
Present a clear, concise, and relevant scholarly argument.
Support substantive claims with appropriate evidence and references.
Maintain a professional, respectful, and objective tone.
Disclose any relevant conflicts of interest.
Confirm that the submission is original and does not violate applicable copyright or publication ethics requirements.
Comments may address substantive academic matters, including research design, methodology, data interpretation, theoretical arguments, literature coverage, scholarly conclusions, and research integrity.
The journal may establish reasonable requirements concerning length, formatting, references, and supporting documentation. Where appropriate, authors may be asked to revise their submissions before further consideration.
3. Editorial Assessment and Review
All post-publication contributions will be assessed by the editorial team to determine their relevance, scholarly value, originality, clarity, and compliance with the journal's publication ethics standards.
The editor-in-chief or a designated editor will determine the appropriate assessment procedure. Where a submission involves specialized academic issues, independent experts or external reviewers may be consulted.
The journal may decline a contribution if it:
Falls outside the scope of the original article or the journal.
Lacks sufficient scholarly substance or supporting evidence.
Contains defamatory statements, personal attacks, harassment, or abusive language.
Includes knowingly false or demonstrably misleading allegations.
Violates copyright, confidentiality, or other applicable ethical requirements.
Presents material that is irrelevant, duplicative, or otherwise unsuitable for publication.
Editorial decisions will be based on scholarly merit, relevance, evidence, and ethical considerations rather than on whether the comments agree with the conclusions of the original article.
4. Right of Response by Original Authors
Where a post-publication contribution raises substantive questions or criticisms concerning a published article, JLLSCS may invite the original author or authors to provide a response.
The response should address the issues raised directly, provide relevant clarification or supporting evidence, and maintain the same standards of scholarly integrity and professional conduct required of other contributions.
The journal aims to provide a fair opportunity for meaningful academic exchange. Where appropriate, the original comment and the authors' response may be published together or linked to facilitate balanced discussion.
The publication of a response does not automatically imply that the original article is incorrect, nor does the publication of a critical comment establish that misconduct has occurred. Each contribution will be evaluated on its own merits.
5. Publication and Accessibility
Accepted post-publication comments and responses may be published as separate scholarly contributions, correspondence, commentaries, or another appropriate format determined by the editorial team.
Where technically and editorially feasible, the journal will provide a clear link between the discussion and the original article so that readers can access the relevant materials and understand the context of the exchange.
Published contributions will be subject to the journal's applicable editorial, copyright, licensing, and publication ethics policies. Authors remain responsible for the accuracy and integrity of their contributions.
JLLSCS will not suppress legitimate scholarly criticism solely because it challenges the interpretation, methodology, or conclusions of a previously published article.
6. Corrections and Concerns Regarding Published Articles
If a post-publication comment or other communication identifies a possible error, inaccuracy, ethical violation, or concern affecting the validity or reliability of a published article, the editorial team will assess the matter in accordance with the journal's publication ethics policies and relevant COPE guidance.
Depending on the nature of the concern, the journal may:
Request clarification or supporting documentation from the authors.
Consult independent experts or relevant research specialists.
Seek information from the authors' affiliated institutions or research ethics committees.
Publish a correction when an identifiable error requires correction but does not invalidate the overall findings.
Publish an expression of concern when substantial questions remain unresolved and readers should be informed while further investigation is undertaken.
Retract an article when the findings are unreliable or serious ethical or publication violations warrant retraction.
Publish another appropriate editorial notice when necessary to clarify the status or reliability of the scholarly record.
Editorial action will be proportionate to the evidence and the seriousness of the concern. The journal will distinguish between legitimate scholarly disagreement, honest error, and suspected or established research misconduct.
Where an investigation falls primarily within the responsibility of a research institution or another competent authority, JLLSCS may refer the matter to that body and cooperate as appropriate. The journal will make its own editorial decisions concerning the published record based on the available evidence and relevant publication ethics principles.
7. Research Misconduct and Ethical Concerns
If a post-publication contribution raises credible concerns about plagiarism, data fabrication, data falsification, duplicate publication, inappropriate authorship, citation manipulation, manipulated peer review, or other potential research misconduct, the journal will follow its established Allegations of Research Misconduct Policy.
Allegations will be assessed fairly and confidentially, and the individuals concerned will be given an appropriate opportunity to respond. The journal will not treat an allegation as proven solely because it has been submitted or published as a comment.
Where necessary, JLLSCS may consult independent experts, contact relevant institutions, or seek advice from appropriate research ethics bodies. Any subsequent editorial action will be guided by the available evidence and the need to maintain the integrity of the scholarly record.
8. Confidentiality and Conflicts of Interest
JLLSCS will handle correspondence and supporting documentation relating to post-publication discussion responsibly and maintain confidentiality where appropriate, subject to the requirements of a fair assessment and applicable legal or ethical obligations.
Individuals participating in the assessment or publication of a comment or response must disclose relevant actual or potential conflicts of interest. Editors or reviewers whose impartiality may be compromised will be excluded from the decision-making process where appropriate.
The journal will take reasonable steps to ensure that editorial decisions remain independent, fair, and based on scholarly and ethical considerations.
9. Appeals and Complaints
Authors or contributors who believe that a decision concerning a post-publication submission was made unfairly may submit a reasoned appeal to the editorial office.
An appeal should explain the grounds for reconsideration and provide relevant supporting information. Where practicable, the appeal will be assessed by an editor or designated representative who was not directly involved in the original decision.
Complaints concerning editorial conduct or possible breaches of publication ethics will be handled in accordance with the journal's relevant policies and procedures.
10. Commitment to Transparency and Scholarly Integrity
JLLSCS is committed to maintaining a transparent, respectful, and intellectually open environment in which published research can be examined, questioned, and improved through evidence-based discussion.
The journal recognizes that responsible post-publication discussion strengthens the quality of scholarly communication, encourages collaboration, supports the correction of errors, and promotes trust in academic research.
All post-publication contributions will be handled in accordance with this policy, the journal's editorial procedures, and relevant publication ethics principles and guidance issued by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).
Through this policy, JLLSCS seeks to safeguard the scholarly record and promote responsible academic exchange across language, literature, social sciences, and cultural studies.
